Reports: Manuel gets two-year deal to continue to manage Mets

NEW YORK -- Jerry Manuel and the New York Mets were closing in on a new contract Friday.

Progress in his contract talks was first reported by foxsports.com.

The sides were working on a deal that would be for two guaranteed seasons and would include a club option for 2011. The Mets hoped to finish an agreement later Friday and hold a Saturday telephone conference call.

Manuel took over on an interim basis June 17, when New York was 34-35. While the Mets built a 3½-game NL East lead in September, they were eliminated from postseason contention on the final day of the season for the second straight year. They finished at 89-73.

Manuel, who had been Randolph's bench coach, was AL Manager of the Year in 2000 when he led the Chicago White Sox to a league-best 95-67. He was fired by Chicago in 2003 following

yes, funaly im reasured. he did great this season turning wilies junk into somehting decent

true that, the records certainly would have been different had he been there the whole year

but if he knew how to manage a bullpen he'd be in the playoffs right now
